NH Guides' Association members take initiative for safety with SOLO Going above and far beyond what the state requires for emergency training, a number of NHGA members decided to raise the bar and take the Wilderness First Aid course. The NHGA contacted SOLO Schools (Stonehouse Open Learning Opportunities) which is based in Conway, NH. SOLO is the nations foremost trainer of wilderness emergency training, and sends its instructors out to teach nationwide and internationally. We are fortunate to have SOLO located right in our own home state. Founded in 1976, SOLO is the only school of its kind offering an educational, research and conference center to both the international outdoor rescue and emergency medical communities as well as the local rural communities of New England. SOLO has instructed over 75,000 individuals, guides, mountain rescue teams, and staffs from organizations such as NOLS, Outward Bound, the Appalachian Mountain Club, The Sierra Club, and the National Parks Service as well as fire, rescue and ambulance teams. NHGA members gave up an entire weekend and each paid for the cost of the tuition personally on a voluntary basis. The state requires that NH guide license holders only take basic first aid and CPR training which for most folks is adequate when working in an office or warehouse environment. Hunting and fishing guides however are more often than not out of cell phone range and deep into the wild. The Wilderness First Aid course teaches how to deal with the types of emergencies likely to be encountered when undertaking sporting activities. A full 25% of the NHGA membership has so far taken the course, with many other members ready to go. Below are some photo's taken during an emergency scenario training in a snowy forest. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
